Managing Hammertoe

If you have ever experienced pain or discomfort or unusual changes in the shape of your toes, you may be dealing with a foot condition known as hammertoe. This deformity occurs when one or more toe joints become bent, resembling the shape of a hammer. Hammertoe can cause other foot conditions, such as calluses or corns where your toe rubs against the inside of the shoe. Symptoms may include pain while wearing shoes, swelling, redness, or difficulty straightening your toe. The good news is that there are effective treatments to alleviate the discomfort caused by hammertoe. Start by choosing footwear with a soft, deep, and roomy toe box to reduce pressure on your toes. Shoe Inserts, cushioning pads, or taping can move the toe and ease the pain. Incorporating simple exercises into your daily routine can also help. Try toe crunches by scrunching a towel with your toes while keeping your heel planted. Or, gently stretch your toes by pulling them toward you using your hands or a towel. In severe cases, a surgical solution may be necessary to release the tendon that is keeping the toe curled up. If you are afflicted with hammertoe, it is suggested that you seek the help of a podiatrist for an exam and treatment options.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.
